Toads are to be seen anywhere and everywhere in the Goyt Valley, along with Frogs. They inhabit ponds and ditches at all elevations, as onfirmed by spawn even if the adult is not always present. Once they have spawned they seem to disappear but seem to me to spend most of their lives hiding under large stones to avoid predation. |

This minute toadlet was netted (and returned) to Pond Number Two, at SK 003 741 - Elev: 422 metres, which is acidic like all moorland ponds. Toadlets are smaller than bluebottles. Everywhere heaving with toads: July 20th. |

Too often I see Frogs and Toads breeding early and becoming trapped under ice. If you see ice on a pond try to break it substantially to give air breathers a chance. Ducks are useful at keeping an area ice free: March 23rd. |

Onw of my favourite images. I was laid out on the ground as low as possible to get this angle: March 19th. |
