Navigation: wildlife > amphibians > Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus)

Declaration: For the record I do not claim to have seen or heard of this species in the Goyt Valley. It is shown as an illustration. I very nearly stepped on this Newt on the path at a nature reserve. They migrate to hibernate under nearby buildings, sheds etc. I saw it when others, including cyclists, might not have, given all the leaves and other path debris. It looked lifeless and was anything but lifeless when picked up. It was bone dry and dusty. I wetted it, photographed it on moss, then placed directly into a pond nearby. These Newts when fully grown are much larger. This one only a juvenile. They are covered entirely with prominent dimples. They go darker and are unmistakable, compared to our other native species.
