I am often asked about St. Mark's Flies because they swarm in large numbers in breeding season. They are not the slightest bit interested in human beings and will not bother you, though I have met people somewhat disconcerted by their hovering at head height in swarms. |

Tipula maxima is a giant Cranefly with a 40mm wing span, delivering a powerful flight. This overtook me as I was acending Stakeside and I initially mistook it for a female Common Darter Dragonfly. It is actually a fraction bigger than our smallest Dragonfly, the Black Darter though that is much fatter and of course black. Forced to use 600mm lens as no macro: September 3rd. 2024 |
