  Navigation: wildlife > mammals

There will not be many images under this heading as there are so few likely to pass my lens. The same applies to mammals as applies to birds here. They are not ordinarily my targets of choice. If I see an opportunity I will go for it but otherwise I do not go out of my way.

Spotted stealing mealworms I put out for the Blackbirds, so I added sunflower hearts and a suet ball. They love it. Wood Mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus): June 22nd. 2023

This is in part an exercise to create a standard template to host one of my garden variety wildlife camera videos, which are maximum 640 x 480 pixels.

This particular camera may be moved to any part of my home to capture activity I believe may be in progress. Unlike a trail camera I can monitor this on the PC.

I was aware of Woodmouse activity under the covered way at the side of my home. The shelf seen in the video 1.5 metres above ground. There I feed the Woodmice with sunflower hearts (bird food).

Oddly, the bowl of food quickly attracted large slugs. You can see one in the background in the video. Slug trails on the food, bowl and surroundings.

I employed an old gardening trick to stop that slug activity. Slugs will not pass over copper for unknown reasons. I cobbled together a 22mm copper pipe frame using 4 copper elbows (no need to solder). Interesting to watch one slug attacking in different places without success.

The question is, can slugs somehow detect the presence of that food I wonder. Apparently they have a powerful sense of smell: October 16th. 2022

I found this Hedgehog sleeping behind a shovel next to my back door, which is sheltered by the covered way.

I transferred the Hedgehog next to one of the Hedgehog houses at the end of my small back garden.

The Hedgehog entered the house for a browse then left shortly after, before returning until nightfall.

April 29th.

This Brown Hare was snapped just outside the Goyt Valley. Visit SK 026 749 - Elev: 390 metres a good place in the Goyt Valley to see Brown Hare if you can catch them. I saw this in the distance and guessed where it might pass. I then got dug in deep and waited. Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus) Redmoor [SJ 984 758 - Elev: 308 metres] on Route 16: July 14th.

Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus) Goyt Valley [SK 011 775 - Elev: 285 metres] on Route 2 - Early morning, thick with frost and this was rummaging about. Still wildlife, cute or not: November 30th.

Millie: One of my doggy pals I have bumped into from time to time, posing for a picture and running to the owner: April 29th.

Got this one in my garden using the long lens rather than a wildlife camera, which delivers a smaller image. Also in broad daylight but the small area of garden concerned is protected by a cricket-ball net with 50mm mesh, therefore safe from predators. A dismal and wet day which prevent a journey, but compensated me in other ways. Shot through glass from indoors. Far from ideal: May 16th. 2024
